Momentum seems hard to come by for the Yanks theses days; after winning the day before, the Bombers were blown out of the water by the hapless Blue Jays, 14-3.
The lone bright spot in the evening was the return of Hideki Matsui, who hit a three run homer in the top of the seventh.

According to multiple sources, the New York Yankees might be able to find a little boost courtesy of some players making their way back from the disabled list.

As early as tomorrow, Yankee skipper Joe Girardi has hinted that injured outfielder Hideki Matsui may return to the lineup: (from MLB.com)

Matsui had 15 simulated at-bats on Sunday in Tampa, Fla., getting his early work in after playing in three games for the Class A Tampa Yankees.

With his left knee showing no signs of swelling, the Yankees are optimistic that Matsui -- out since June 22 with inflammation -- may be able to rejoin the big league club as it opens a six-game road trip on Tuesday at Toronto.

"It's a big bat to get back in the lineup," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "Hideki has obviously been an integral part of this lineup the last four or five years. He'll be a welcome addition."

Matsui had 11 at-bats against right-handed pitching on Sunday and four against left-handers. He has logged eight total at-bats in game action for Tampa, stroking two hits -- including a home run -- and walking twice.

The Yankees have also hinted that a Saturday call-up may bring either Philip Hughes or Carl Pavano to help the back end of their rotation.

Hughes has been having mixed results while pitching for Scranton, recovering from a stress fracture in his rib cage. Pavano, finalizing the last year of his four year mega million bust deal, looks to salvage any shred of dignity he may have left.

From the Associated Press:

NEW YORK -- The Yankees acknowledged that Hideki Matsui could need surgery on his ailing left knee if it doesn't start feeling better. The slugger was placed on the 15-day disabled list Friday.

"Hopefully, this is a 15-day thing and we get him healthy and get him better," manager Joe Girardi said. "Could it be more? Yes."

Matsui had surgery on his right knee last offseason, but his left one is hurting now. The designated hitter and part-time left fielder is batting .323 with seven homers and 34 RBIs in 69 games.

"It's sore. There's some issues in there, obviously," Girardi said. "He had to have it drained again yesterday and hopefully it calms down now."

Asked if surgery was a possibility, Girardi said: "I think when things don't get healthy, surgery is always your next bet. But we're hoping to avoid that."

General manager Brian Cashman said surgery for Matsui would be a "last resort."

The Yankees have made a bunch of roster moves to help aid a depleted bullpen:

Optioned RHP Ross Ohlendorf to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre; recalled LHP Kei Igawa from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
Placed OF Hideki Matsui on the 15-day disabled list; purchased the contract of RHP Sidney Ponson from Double-A Trenton.
