Continuing with our look at the potential offseason moves that the Bombers will and need to make to put 2008 behind them, we take a look at Andy Pettite, and whether he'll be wearing pinstripes next season.

Andy went 14-14 in 2008 and was a symbol of "awful consistency". He could never put together consecutive quality starts, and his ability to stop Yankee losing streaks (as had in the past) was almost non-existent.

His era of 4.54 was his worst since he posted a 4.70 era in 1999. He was still able to throw over 200 innings last season, but his 103 earned runs was a career worst.

Andy's return will depend on how successful the Yankees are in luring free agent arms to their new home in the Bronx. If the Yanks can sign CC, AJ, or any othe guy they have on their radar, Andy's return chances may seem slim.

In the final game ever played at Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Bombers sent out baseball's beloved cathedral in grand fashion. Andy Pettite pitched the best he has in a month, Jose Molina hit the last ever home run at the Stadium, and Mariano Rivera closed the door (despite a non save situation) in Mo-like fashion to end the ninth.

Derek Jeter was taken out of the game in the ninth inning to receive the proper sendoff the Yankee Captain was due. The entire Stadium erupted when Jeter came out to tip his hat, one last time.

Scouting Report:
Orioles Against the Blue Jays in his last start, Waters spun the best outing of his young career. The 28-year-old rookie allowed just four hits in his first shutout. With the help of his strong sinker, accompanied with a side-arm delivery that he occasionally mixed in to surprise Toronto's hitters, the left-hander did not allow a runner to reach second base until the eighth inning. Waters also did not face more than four batters in any one inning. By the end of the game, his season ERA plummeted almost a full run, from 5.73 to 4.75.

Yankees: In his final tuneup before he takes the mound for the last game at Yankee Stadium, Pettitte picked up a career-high fifth straight loss Tuesday against the White Sox. One inning spoiled the outing as he gave up three runs in the fourth and four earned runs total, striking out four. He recorded three walks, one intentional, through his six innings, and one forced in a run as the bases were loaded. Pettitte will look for just his second win since July 31 on Sunday. He is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season.

Scouting Report:
White Sox: Through seven innings on Thursday against the Blue Jays, Floyd put up zeros against one of baseball's hottest teams. But Toronto got to Floyd for four in the eighth, as part of a six-run rally, ending Floyd's five-game winning streak and a stretch of nine straight starts without a loss. Floyd struck out two and walked one over 7 1/3 innings, giving him 125 strikeouts and 67 walks over 181 1/3 innings this season. Floyd received a no-decision against the Yankees this season, having allowed five runs in six innings during his lone start, and has no lifetime mark against New York either. Tuesday marks his second appearance and first start at Yankee Stadium.

Yankees: Pettitte's struggles on the mound continued on Wednesday as he gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits to make an early exit after just 4 2/3 innings. He delivered a solid performance until the fifth inning, when he got into trouble and found himself in a bases-loaded jam. It marked Pettitte's fourth straight losing decision. While he is traditionally successful in the second half of the season, the veteran has posted a 3-6 record with a 5.43 ERA since the All-Star break. He has not faced the White Sox this season.

Scouting Report:
Yankees: Pettitte struggled early against the Blue Jays on Sunday and couldn't bounce back as he picked up his second straight loss. He surrendered three runs in the opening frame, and the Toronto batters worked Pettitte for 30 pitches in the first inning. The veteran was more economical as the game continued, leaving with 112 throws after 6 1/3 innings. Pettitte was tagged for six runs on 10 hits, striking out four with one walk. It marked his second straight start giving up six earned runs. In his only start against the Mariners this season, Pettitte held Seattle to two runs and eight hits over six innings.

Mariners: The highly touted right-hander makes his Major League starting debut slightly more than a month after being sent to Triple-A Tacoma to make the transition from late-inning reliever to starter. He was superb out of the bullpen, leading the team in saves with 10 and posting a 1.47 ERA in 40 relief appearances. Morrow has a plethora of pitches that he has developed, including a 94-mph fastball and 78-79-mph curveball. He also worked on a changeup during his stint in the Minors to prepare for this month ?- and beyond. His success as a starter could help determine how busy the front office is during the offseason in shoring up a rotation that has wobbled most of the season.

Scouting Report:
Blue Jays: On Tuesday, Halladay picked up a win after allowing just two runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and no walks over six innings against Tampa Bay. The right-hander improved to 4-1 with a 1.96 ERA in five August starts and is now 8-3 with a 2.07 ERA over his last 11 outings. Halladay has registered 75 strikeouts and just 15 walks over 82 2/3 innings over those 11 starts. In his career against the Yankees, Halladay is 13-5 with a 2.92 ERA in 30 appearances.

Yankees: Pettitte exited after just 4 2/3 innings Tuesday night after he served up six runs on 10 hits to the Red Sox. It marked his shortest outing since July 2, also against Boston. He gave up three runs in the first three innings and recorded three early walks to get into trouble. Despite the rough outing, Pettitte said he felt that he was locating his pitches where he wanted to and throwing his changeup for strikes, he just couldn't get the outs. He is 1-1 with a 3.46 ERA against Toronto.

Scouting Report:
Red Sox: With the tingling and numbness in his right arm still an issue, Josh Beckett will be skipped against the Yankees, leaving a vacancy that will likely be filled by Wakefield, who pitched a side session on Saturday and was pronounced ready to start on Tuesday. The knuckleballer has been on the disabled list since Aug. 7 with tightness in his right shoulder and is expected to be activated in time to face the Yankees on Tuesday. In his two starts before going on the disabled list, Wakefield had gone 1-0 with a 0.73 ERA over 12 1/3 innings. In his career against the Yankees, the 16-year veteran is 9-17 with a 5.14 ERA.

Yankees: Pettitte picked up his 13th win of the season and his first since July 26 with seven innings of one-run ball on Wednesday at the Rogers Centre, holding the Blue Jays to just Alex Rios' run-scoring single in the sixth inning. Pettitte has given up five hits or fewer in 11 of his 27 appearances this season. He is 1-1 with a 5.06 ERA in two starts against the Red Sox this season, having beaten them on July 26 at Fenway Park with six innings of three-run ball, though only one was earned.

Andy Pettite strikes out four over seven strong innings, add a Derek Jeter home run and the Yanks topple the Blue Jays 5-1.

Yankees: Pettitte pitched seven solid innings to keep the Yankees in the game on Friday night, coming away with his second straight no-decision. It marked just his fifth no-decision of the season. The lefty held the Royals to six hits and struck out seven, but he was hurt by walks, as two of the four runners he put on base by the walk crossed home plate. Pettitte was tagged for three runs, but he worked himself out of several jams to limit the damage and said he felt good on the mound. In his last outing against Toronto, Pettitte gave up eight hits and four runs through six innings to take the loss.

Blue Jays: Purcey fell behind in a lot of counts in his last start, but managed to escape any damage, spinning six shutout innings against the Tigers on Wednesday. Purcey, who logged 99 pitches in the effort, might have pitched deeper into the game had it not been for a 49-minute rain delay in the top of the seventh inning. The left-hander finished with four strikeouts and three walks, scattering just two hits in the win over Detroit. Purcey is 1-1 with a 3.86 ERA in three starts at Rogers Centre this season.

Scouting Report:
Yankees: Pettitte completed his evening Thursday charged with nine runs on a season-high 11 hits over 5 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out two, losing for just the third time in his last 14 starts. In 19 career starts against Texas, Pettitte is 9-7 with a 5.36 ERA.

Rangers: Harrison's starts at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington have been declining. After winning his Major League debut at home, allowing two runs in seven innings to the Angels, he's had more runs allowed than innings pitched in his last two home outings. In his most recent, he allowed six runs -- four earned -- to the Mariners in 4 2/3 innings and he walked five. "I try to concentrate on keeping the ball down here, but you don't want to put it in the dirt," he said. Harrison took the loss, giving him a 12.41 ERA in his two losses this season. Harrison will have the opportunity to improve his home numbers Tuesday in his first career start against the Yankees.

Scouting Report:
Angels: Garland pitched well enough to get the win in his last outing but was buoyed by a huge offensive outburst that put up 11 runs on the Orioles. Garland, however, also allowed five runs and had trouble with the long ball as all five of those runs came via a three-run and a two-run homer. Garland has been inconsistent this season, however, and hasn't been able to register wins in consecutive starts since April 17 and 23. Despite the two homers the right hander was able to shut down the Orioles from the second through the sixth innings allowing just two hits in that stretch before he was pulled in the sixth. Garland is now 6-2 on the road and has yet to face the Yankees this season.

Yankees: After a rocky first inning last Saturday at Fenway, when he allowed two unearned runs, Pettitte settled down and yielded just a harmless solo homer to J.D. Drew over the next five innings to earn his seventh win in nine starts. He is 3-2 in July with a 3.03 ERA in five starts. Pettitte will look to continue his career success against the Angels, with a 12-6 lifetime record to go with a 4.02 ERA in 22 starts lifetime against the Halos. This is his first start this season against the Angels.

Jason Giambi hit the game winning home run in the sixth inning and Andy Pettite pitched eight innings, striking out nine, en route to a Bomber 2-1 win over Oakland. The Yanks are now eight games over .500.

Scouting Report:
A's: Two days before making his second career All-Star appearance, Duchscherer pitched 7 2/3 solid innings against the Angels, giving up just two runs on five hits while walking two and striking out three in a no-decision. He has yet to surrender more than three earned runs in a game, and his last start marked the 15th time in 16 starts he walked two batters or fewer. Duchscherer will look to repeat his stellar first half against a team he is 1-0 against in his only career start. He gave up one run on five hits through seven innings while striking out four while facing the Yankees earlier this year.

Yankees: Pettitte's successful first half of the season came to a disappointing end during his last outing against the Blue Jays. New York's veteran left-hander suffered through a four-run second inning en route to his seventh loss of the season. The biggest blow came off the bat of infielder Marco Scutaro who hit a three-run home run over the wall in left to break the game wide-open. Pettitte managed to settle down after that, though, and completed six innings, allowing eight hits while striking out six. In all of Pettitte's losses this season he has surrendered at least seven hits. He is 9-5 with a 3.42 ERA in 18 career starts against Oakland.

AJ Burrnet shut down the Yankee lineup until Jason Giambi homered in the ninth inning. Burnett struck out eight and allowed only six hits.

Scouting Report:
Yankees: Coming off one of his worst starts of the year -- he had allowed six runs in 4 2/3 innings to the Red Sox on July 3 -- Pettitte retired the first two Rays he saw on two pitches on Tuesday. Then he mowed through the rest of baseball's best team, allowing only one batter to reach second base through the first six innings.

Blue Jays: Tallet will be making a spot start in place of injured starter Dustin McGowan. This will be Tallet's first start of the season and only the seventh of his career -- and the first since 2006. The left-hander has been one of the better relievers for the Jays this year. He has allowed just 32 hits over 35 innings, while holding opponents to a .239 batting average. In his last appearance, facing Baltimore on Tuesday, Tallet tossed two perfect innings.

Andy Pettite pitched eight innings of four hit ball, striking out five Rays batters and walking none, leading the Yanks to a 5-0 victory over the AL-East leading Tampa Bay Rays.

Melky Cabrera hit his eight home run of the season and Derek Jeter added two RBIs in the win.

Rays: The Rays ace had a career May, but has struggled in his last few appearances. Kazmir admitted his slider and changeup weren't up to par in a five-inning appearance June 27 at Pittsburgh, and he didn't fare much better vs. the Red Sox on Wednesday night. Kazmir threw 107 pitches in five innings and gave up a season-high seven hits. The reigning American League strikeout king matched his season-low by fanning three Sox batters and will look to reestablish his dominance vs. the Yankees. Kazmir won a May 15 contest in New York, delivering six shutout innings en route to a 5-1 Rays win, and will face the Yankees for the second time this season.

Yankees: The Yankees' sharpest pitcher since early June, Pettitte was off his game in the opener of a four-game set with the Red Sox on Thursday, allowing five earned runs on nine hits in 4 2/3 innings to take his first loss since May 17. The loss prompted a closed-door meeting led by manager Joe Girardi.

Red Sox lefty Jon Lester allowed five hits en route to a complete game shutout against the Yankees last night.
Andy Pettite lasted only four and two thirds innings pitched, giving up six runs (five were earned).
The silver lining in last night's dismal offensive showing by the Bombers was Robinson Cano's two hits. Cano is 6-12 in his last three games, and is looking like he's finally coming out of the horrific slump that plagued him early in the season.
