Associated Press Report; (from ESPN.com)

NEW YORK -- The Cincinnati Reds activated shortstop Jeff Keppinger from the disabled list Sunday and designated infielder Andy Phillips for assignment.

Keppinger was in the lineup as Cincinnati tried for a three-game sweep of the New York Yankees. He batted second and started at shortstop, then moved to third base in the third inning to replace injured Edwin Encarnacion.

Phillips was called up from the minors on May 28. He made two starts at third base for Cincinnati and was batting .143 (3-for-21) with four RBIs. He was hitless in his past 10 at-bats.

The Reds have 10 days to trade, release or send Phillips outright to the minors.

Behind strong pitching by Andy Pettite and the "power of the 'stache" (Jason Giambi), the Yankees were able to avoid being swept by the Big Red Machine. Despite a 56 minute rain delay, Yankee bats weren't cooled off by the swirling winds:

Andy Pettitte, LHP (7-5, 4.29)
Yankees (41-35)

Scouting Report:
Reds: Cueto pitched seven strong innings but came up short in a 3-1 Reds loss to the Dodgers on Tuesday. While allowing two earned runs and five hits with three walks and two strikeouts, Cueto was much better than his previous six-run, eight-walk outing vs. St. Louis. He paid for walking the No. 8 hitter in the third inning, as he later scored the game's first run. But Cueto did a nice job working out of a fourth-inning, bases-loaded jam by getting an inning-ending double play.

Yankees: Pettitte will look to keep his rebound going as he works against the Reds lineup. Pettitte's last start was dominant, as he hurled seven innings of scoreless ball to beat the Padres on Tuesday, 8-0. The left-hander has allowed just one run over his past 15 innings, good for a 0.60 ERA. He has made nine career starts against the Reds, most from his days in the National League, faring 3-3 with a 4.05 ERA. He has not faced Cincinnati since 2006.

Reds rookie righthander Daryl Thompson shut out Yankee hitters yesterday, going five innings and giving up only four hits. Thompson was removed after reaching a pitch count limit, but the Bombers were unable to take advantage getting to the Reds bullpen early.

Yankee rookie long reliever turned starter, Dan Giese, pitched six and two thirds strong innings for the Yanks, but wound up on the losing side, giving up three unearned runs. Giese struck out five Reds batters and only allowed four hits.

Scouting Report:
Reds: Cincinnati said it expects to recall Thompson from Triple-A Louisville to make his Major League debut at Yankee Stadium. In 14 starts this season at Louisville and Double-A Chattanooga, Thompson was 6-2 with a 2.22 ERA. He pitched last year in Single-A. He was part of an eight-player trade in 2006 between the Reds and Washington.

Yankees: Giese, a former starter in the Minors, was called up from Triple-A Scranton earlier this month to be a long reliever. Giese (1-1) has done well in that role, giving up one run in 7 1/3 innings over three appearances. Now, his role will be even more critical. General manager Brian Cashman said that before he explored the trade market, he wanted to look internally to replace the injured Chien-Ming Wang in the rotation. Giese has an immense opportunity.

Reds rookie first basemen Joey Votto homered off Mike Mussina, en route to a 4-2 Cincinnati victory on Friday. The homer was Votto's 12th of the season and his 37th RBI.

Reds right hander Edinson Volquez improved to 10-2 on the season after striking out five and allowing two runs on seven hits. Volquez lasted seven innings and Fransisco Cordero earned his 14th save of the season.

Mussina lasted 8 innings last night, and he continues to show that he still has a lot left in his arm. Despite giving up four runs, Moose stuck out four batters while walking only two.

Scouting Report:
Reds: Volquez was solid in his last start against the Red Sox on Saturday. The 24-year-old gave up just three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits with one walk and nine strikeouts and recorded his 11th quality start of the season. It marked the longest quality start streak by a Reds pitcher since Jose Rijo had 15 straight in 1993. Volquez's only troubles were two wild pitches early in the game, both of which wound up allowing a run to score.

Yankees: Mussina's 260th victory made him the sixth pitcher in Major League history to record 10 or more wins in 17 consecutive seasons, beating the Astros on Saturday in Houston. After the struggles that Mussina endured at the tail end of the '07 campaign, his thoughts were more focused on staying in the rotation than running off the type of success that he has appreciated this season -- Saturday's victory was Mussina's ninth in his last 11 starts. Alex Rodriguez explained that Mussina has started moving the ball away from lefties and into righties, throwing a moving two-seamer and using his fastball as more of a strikeout tool. He faced the Reds once in 2003 and lost.
