Oliver Perez must have been auditioning for his role in the rotation yesterday; he pitched one of the best games of his career. Perez struck out eight Yankee hitters en route to a 3-1 victory. The Mets officially won the season series against the Yanks, only the second time since Interleague began.
In what was a quiet day for Yankee bats, Wilson Betemit hit a solo homer to score the Yankees only run.

Darrell Rasner, RHP (4-5, 4.50)
Yankees (42-36)
Oliver Perez, LHP (5-5, 5.29)
Mets (38-39)

Scouting Report:
Yankees: Rasner will get the ball for a Subway Series start against the Mets after his earlier turn this year was washed out by rain at Yankee Stadium. His season ended last May in a start against the Mets when Endy Chavez broke Rasner's right index finger with a first-inning comebacker at Shea Stadium.

Mets: The Mariners pounced on Perez in his Tuesday start, hammering him for five runs in five innings. Aside from three strikeouts, Perez allowed seven hits -- two of which were home runs -- and he plunked a batter. While the Mets are still figuring out what to do with the flashy yet erratic lefty, manager Jerry Manuel said after Tuesday's game that the team will have to consider its options as to whether keeping Perez in the rotation would benefit the club. If he makes his next start vs. the Yankees, it could be to his advantage, because he is a career 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA against the Bronx Bombers.

Despite a 6th inning rain delay, Andy Pettite was able to stay loose and pitch six innings, giving up two runs, while striking out four (Beltran three times).
Giambi, Posada, and Cano each had an RBI in the Yanks 3-2 win over the Mets. Santana got the loss, his seventh of the season.

Andy Pettitte, LHP (8-5, 4.04)
Yankees (42-36)
Johan Santana, LHP (7-6, 2.93)
Mets (38-39)

Scouting Report:
Yankees: Pettitte threw six shutout innings on Sunday in leading the Yankees to a 4-1 victory over the Reds in New York, and likely could have gone longer if not for a 56-minute rain delay. Pettitte has allowed just one earned run in his last three games and none in 19 innings, his longest scoreless stretch since a career-best 23-inning streak in 1997. He's 7-4 with a 3.48 ERA in 17 career regular season starts against the Mets, though one of those losses came earlier this year.

Mets: Santana left a fastball up in the zone to Mariners pitcher Felix Hernandez on Monday -- resulting in the first grand slam by a pitcher in Interleague Play -- but the Mets lefty survived through seven innings and allowed only one earned run in the 5-2 loss. Totaling 106 pitches (72 strikes), Santana said after that game that his fastball is coming off his hand better than at any other point this season, but it isn't showing in the win column, as he has now lost his last three decisions. Still, Santana is currently undefeated against the Yankees at 4-0 with a 2.98 ERA in 48 1/3 career innings.

Sidney Ponson pitched six strong innings and Bobby Abreu went 4-4 with three runs batted in as the Yankees gave the Mets a taste of their own medicine, returning the favor after being pummeled at home earlier.
Robinson Cano hit his sixth home run of the season, and it looks like his bat is finally beginning to heat up.

Carlos Delgado set the Mets team record for most RBIs in a game (9). Delgado pounded two home runs, grand slam and a three run shot, en route to a Mets 15-6 win at Yankee Stadium.
Carlos Beltran also homered for the Mets, a two run shot.

Sidney Ponson, RHP (4-1, 3.88)
Yankees (42-36)
Pedro Martinez, RHP (2-1, 6.57)
Mets (38-39)

Scouting Report:
Yankees: The veteran Ponson is in line to start the second game in this two-stadium Subway Series. Ponson was 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA in nine starts for the Rangers this season before he was designated for assignment due to off-the-field issues. Ponson made his his Scranton/Wilkes-Barre debut last Saturday, giving up one run through four innings in a tuneup for the Mets. He is 1-1 with a 2.86 ERA in three career starts against the Mets, though he hasn't faced them since 2003.

Mets: Martinez appeared to be cruising on Saturday against the Rockies, until he allowed six runs on seven hits in the fifth inning. Serving up home runs on each of his first two pitches in the inning, Martinez retired only one batter before giving way to his bullpen. He threw 75 pitches, walking one and allowing nine hits in all. Martinez's next outing comes against the Yankees, whom he last faced in 2006, shutting them out over seven innings at Shea.

Mike Pelfrey, RHP (4-6, 4.30)
Mets (38-39)
Dan Giese, RHP (1-2, 0.64)
Yankees (42-36)

Scouting Report:
Mets: Pelfrey walked five batters last Sunday at Coors Field, but managed to pitch out of multiple jams and blank the Rockies over 5 2/3 innings. He was inefficient but effective, throwing 98 pitches and allowing three hits. Pelfrey will start the first half of Friday's doubleheader against the Yankees. He has never faced the Yankees in his career.

Yankees: Giese threw an impressive 6 2/3 innings in his Major League starting debut against the Reds on Saturday. The right-hander recorded outs quickly and avoided long at-bats, throwing only 75 total pitches. Of those 75 tosses, 53 were strikes. Giese was tagged for three unearned runs to pick up the tough-luck loss. He gave up just four hits and struck out five with no walks. The righty's one mistake was a throwing error to second that blew a double-play opportunity. Giese retired 20 of the 25 hitters he faced in his first big league start.
