So much for needing spring training to get used to live pitching.

The Yankees and the Reds combined for twenty four runs and thirty three hits and eight home runs.

On the Bomber side of the box score, Brett Gardner added his second homer of the spring while Robinson Cano and John Rodriguez each hit one of their own.

Yankee pitching, on the other hand, was a different story. Each pitcher gave up at least one run (earned or otherwise) and Damaso Marte gave up a pair of home runs during his inning of work.

According to MSN's Ken Rosenthal, the Bombers are talking trade with the LA Dodgers, and Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrera seem to be the topic of conversation:

As the Dodgers try to resolve their infield, they are again talking to the Yankees about a trade for second baseman Robinson Cano. The teams have resumed their discussions about Cano at the winter meetings, according to one source.

The Dodgers also are interested in Yankees center fielder Melky Cabrera, and the Yankees likely would want outfielder Matt Kemp and pitching in return.

The Dodgers' interest in Cabrera is a sign that they might not be confident of Andruw Jones making a strong return in 2009. The Dodgers also need to find a match for Juan Pierre, who has requested a trade.

In continuing with our Offseason 2009 analysis, we take a look at upgrading the Bomber's Roster via the trade market. We're only looking into feesable trade opportunities, ones that aren't far fetched (say Melky Cabrerra and a sack of potatoes for Carlos Beltran).

Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrerra for Brian Roberts and a low level prospect.

Why This Trade Works

If the Yankees are truly dedicated to getting to the World Series next season and are committed to making necessary organizational upgrades without sacrificing their untouchables (Hughes, Kennedy, Joba, etc) then this trade makes perfect sense (for both teams).

We understand that Cano had an off year in '08 and is likely to rebound next season. Melky, on the other hand, is a nightmare with an outfielder's glove.

Baltimore is a team that's preparing for the future, and they have to decide whether they are going to committ 100% to that rebuilding plan. Obtaining Cano and Melky provide a short term boost to the team's flailing existence while allowing their other components (Adam Jones, Matt Wieter, etc) to grow at a major league level.

Brian Roberts is a great fit for the Yankees. His consistency in the field and at the plate are a major upgrade over Cano and would be better suited to hit leadoff than Damon. Roberts hit 51 doubles last season and stole 40 bases. The year before, Roberts hit 42 doubles and stole 50 bases. His speed is sorely needed in the Yankees aging lineup.

By moving an underperforming Cabrerra, the Yanks would free up roster space to give Brett Gardner and extended shot at playing everyday.

Why This Trade Doesn't Work

Might be too early to give up on
Cabrerra (although that ship has already sailed by our measure). His trade value plumetted this season, after a late season demotion to Scranton. Both Cano and Cabrerra are young, and this trade could come back to bite the Yanks in the ass down the road. Cano, again, had a rough season and should bounce back next year.

We're sure that there are Yankee fans who are fed up with Cabrerra, and wouldn't bat an eyelash if he were moved this offseason, but Cano is worth a lot more than a 31 year old second baseman who has never had to produce in a pressure situation.

The same thing, however, was said when the Yanks traded away Alfonso Soriano.

After blowing a five run lead, the Yanks looked destined to drop the final game of the series against the O's, but thanks to Robinson Cano's heroics in the top of the seventh, the Yanks eeked out a 8-7 win.

Red Sox lefty Jon Lester allowed five hits en route to a complete game shutout against the Yankees last night.
Andy Pettite lasted only four and two thirds innings pitched, giving up six runs (five were earned).
The silver lining in last night's dismal offensive showing by the Bombers was Robinson Cano's two hits. Cano is 6-12 in his last three games, and is looking like he's finally coming out of the horrific slump that plagued him early in the season.

Robinson Cano had two hits and drove in a run, while Johnny Damon and Jorge Posada each added two hits of their own. Yankee bats were held quiet again, as they only managed to eke out two runs.

After finishing off what was a stretch run filled with highs and lows, the Yankees are looking forward to facing off against American League opponents, for the first time in fifteen days.

The Yanks were able to compile a 10-5 record during their assault on NL teams, but at what cost? The Yanks lost ace Chien Ming Wang to a foot injury, keeping him out of the rotation until at least August. The Scranton shuttle was busy as well; Yankee GM Brian Cashman made almost daily moves to facilitate an overtaxed bullpen and called up some reserves to give a depleted outfield some much needed rest.

Mother nature was also unkind to the Yanks, forcing them to sit through a two hour rain delay against the Pirates, and then two shorter delays against the Reds and Mets. The game against Pittsburgh was eventually canceled, and will be made up July 10th.

Robinson Cano has hit well of late, hopefully signifying an end to a horrible start to the season. Joba continued to adapt to his new role as Yankee starter, and pitched well against the Pirates in a 10-0 win. Andy Pettite also looked great as he led the Yankees to a 3-2 victory over Johan Santana and the New York Mets

In the upcoming week, the Bombers will face the Texas Rangers and the Boston Red Sox.

Despite a 6th inning rain delay, Andy Pettite was able to stay loose and pitch six innings, giving up two runs, while striking out four (Beltran three times).
Giambi, Posada, and Cano each had an RBI in the Yanks 3-2 win over the Mets. Santana got the loss, his seventh of the season.
