Chien-Ming Wang, RHP (0-0, -.--)
Koji Uehara, RHP (0-0, -.--)
Scouting Report:
Yankees: Wang made 15 starts for the Yankees last season before his year ended due to a right foot injury suffered while running the bases on June 15 at Houston. The blow was crushing to the Yankees, as they were 12-3 in games the right-handed sinkerballer had started. Despite missing much of last year, Wang's 46 victories since 2006 are tied for third-most in the American League and eighth-most in the Majors. His .754 combined winning percentage over the past three seasons is the second highest in the big leagues, behind only Boston's Jon Lester. Wang did not face the Orioles in 2008 and is 3-1 with a 5.13 ERA in nine career games (eight starts) against Baltimore.
Orioles: Uehara, a former ace of the Yomiuri Giants, will make his Major League debut in the second game of the season. Uehara is undefeated in international competition in his career and was highly decorated in his homeland, winning his league's equivalent of the Rookie of the Year Award once and the Cy Young award twice. Now, Uehara has come to the United States for a new challenge and will immediately slot in as one of Baltimore's most experienced pitchers. Uehara, who learned a circle changeup in Spring Training, is known as an extreme strike-thrower.
CC Sabathia, LHP (0-0, -.--)
Jeremy Guthrie, RHP (0-0, -.--)
Scouting Report:
Yankees: The Yankees prioritized starting pitching immediately after missing the playoffs for the first time since 1993 and set their sights on Sabathia, who inked a seven-year, $161 million deal during the Winter Meetings.
In 35 combined starts with the Indians and Brewers, Sabathia led the Majors in innings pitched (253), complete games (10) and shutouts (five), ranking second in strikeouts (251) and fourth in ERA. Despite the midseason trade to Milwaukee, Sabathia finished fifth in the National League Cy Young Award voting and sixth in NL MVP voting. With a 117-73 career record, Sabathia's .616 winning percentage is the 12th highest among left-handers with as many or more decisions (190) since 1900.
This will be Sabathia's sixth career Opening Day start, and Sabathia leads all active Major Leaguers under the age of 29 in career wins (117), strikeouts (1,393) and innings pitched (1,659.1).
Orioles: The Orioles may have waited until an appropriate moment to name Jeremy Guthrie their Opening Day starter, but it's a role that virtually everybody in the organization knew he would fill. Guthrie was far and away Baltimore's most effective starting pitcher in 2008 and has been outstanding since arriving as a waiver claim in '07. Back then, he was a floundering former prospect with Cleveland, but he's managed to fulfill his potential in Baltimore.
Guthrie will become one of just four starters in the last 20 years -- along with Rick Sutcliffe, Rodrigo Lopez and Mike Mussina -- to start on Opening Day in consecutive years for the Orioles. Guthrie, a former first-round draftee, is the only member of last year's rotation to remain in the same role. The Orioles will keep him on his turn as often as possible, meaning that he'll likely throw again on April 11.
Guthrie was a true standout last season, finishing seventh in the American League in opponents' batting average (.242), 14th in ERA (3.63) and top 25 in both starts (30) and innings (190 2/3). Guthrie made 19 quality starts last season, and 10 of them followed a Baltimore loss. At one point, in fact, he threw six straight quality starts.
In continuing with our Offseason 2009 analysis, we take a look at upgrading the Bomber's Roster via the trade market. We're only looking into feesable trade opportunities, ones that aren't far fetched (say Melky Cabrerra and a sack of potatoes for Carlos Beltran).
Robinson Cano and Melky Cabrerra for Brian Roberts and a low level prospect.
Why This Trade Works
If the Yankees are truly dedicated to getting to the World Series next season and are committed to making necessary organizational upgrades without sacrificing their untouchables (Hughes, Kennedy, Joba, etc) then this trade makes perfect sense (for both teams).
We understand that Cano had an off year in '08 and is likely to rebound next season. Melky, on the other hand, is a nightmare with an outfielder's glove.
Baltimore is a team that's preparing for the future, and they have to decide whether they are going to committ 100% to that rebuilding plan. Obtaining Cano and Melky provide a short term boost to the team's flailing existence while allowing their other components (Adam Jones, Matt Wieter, etc) to grow at a major league level.
Brian Roberts is a great fit for the Yankees. His consistency in the field and at the plate are a major upgrade over Cano and would be better suited to hit leadoff than Damon. Roberts hit 51 doubles last season and stole 40 bases. The year before, Roberts hit 42 doubles and stole 50 bases. His speed is sorely needed in the Yankees aging lineup.
By moving an underperforming Cabrerra, the Yanks would free up roster space to give Brett Gardner and extended shot at playing everyday.
Why This Trade Doesn't Work
Might be too early to give up on Cabrerra (although that ship has already sailed by our measure). His trade value plumetted this season, after a late season demotion to Scranton. Both Cano and Cabrerra are young, and this trade could come back to bite the Yanks in the ass down the road. Cano, again, had a rough season and should bounce back next year.
We're sure that there are Yankee fans who are fed up with Cabrerra, and wouldn't bat an eyelash if he were moved this offseason, but Cano is worth a lot more than a 31 year old second baseman who has never had to produce in a pressure situation.
The same thing, however, was said when the Yanks traded away Alfonso Soriano.
In the final game ever played at Yankee Stadium, the Bronx
Bombers sent out baseball's beloved cathedral in grand fashion. Andy Pettite pitched the best he has in a month, Jose Molina hit the last ever home run at the Stadium, and Mariano Rivera closed the door (despite a non save situation) in Mo-like fashion to end the ninth.
Derek Jeter was taken out of the game in the ninth inning to receive the proper sendoff the Yankee Captain was due. The entire Stadium erupted when Jeter came out to tip his hat, one last time.

Pettite to Take Hill for Final Time at Yankee Stadium, Chris Waters Moments Away from Becoming a Triva Answer
Chris Waters, LHP (3-3, 4.75)
Orioles (67-82)
Andy Pettitte, LHP (13-14, 4.57)
Yankees (80-71)
Scouting Report:
Orioles Against the Blue Jays in his last start, Waters spun the best outing of his young career. The 28-year-old rookie allowed just four hits in his first shutout. With the help of his strong sinker, accompanied with a side-arm delivery that he occasionally mixed in to surprise Toronto's hitters, the left-hander did not allow a runner to reach second base until the eighth inning. Waters also did not face more than four batters in any one inning. By the end of the game, his season ERA plummeted almost a full run, from 5.73 to 4.75.
Yankees: In his final tuneup before he takes the mound for the last game at Yankee Stadium, Pettitte picked up a career-high fifth straight loss Tuesday against the White Sox. One inning spoiled the outing as he gave up three runs in the fourth and four earned runs total, striking out four. He recorded three walks, one intentional, through his six innings, and one forced in a run as the bases were loaded. Pettitte will look for just his second win since July 31 on Sunday. He is 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA in two starts against Baltimore this season.
With Brett Gardner on third and two down in the bottom of the ninth, Robinson Cano drived a breaking ball up the middle for the game winning RBI against the Orioles.
Neither team had scored a run up to that point in the game, as pitching for both teams was dominant. Alex Rodriguez was the only Yankee to have multiple hits.

Brian Burres, LHP (7-9, 6.32)
Orioles (67-85)
Alfredo Aceves, RHP (1-0, 1.80)
Yankees (83-71)
Scouting Report:
Orioles: When Daniel Cabrera's season ended with the Orioles placing him on the disabled list Friday, Burres was given yet another chance to prove himself in the starting rotation. Burres will get this start in Cabrera's place, his 22nd opportunity to start this season, and will once again be pitching to prove to the Orioles that he belongs in their plans for 2009. Burres, like so many of the Orioles' young hurlers, has had a season of up and downs -- but mostly downs. The left-hander has worked his way to a 6.32 ERA with a 7-9 record in 28 appearances, seven of them out of the bullpen. Burres' last start came Aug. 31 against Tampa Bay, when he gave up seven earned runs over five innings off nine hits and four walks.
Yankees: Aceves gave another impressive performance in his second start with the Yankees on Monday night. He limited the White Sox to two runs on five hits, striking out three with one walk. In six innings, his one mistake came on a two-run homer that tied the game. But Aceves stayed out of trouble for the most part and kept the pressure off his defense and come away with the no-decision. He has given up just four runs in 20 innings pitched since making his debut with the Yankees on Aug. 31.
Brett Gardner made a fantastic catch, climbing the center field wall at Yankee Stadium, robbing Luke Scott of a home run. In what could be the last great catch ever made at the Stadium, Gardner also added an RBI while going 1-4.
Carl Pavano pitched well enough to earn his fourth win of the season. Thanks to an outstanding display from the bullpen, the Yanks were able to hold onto their 3-2 lead. They're still clinging onto whatever shred of playoff hope they have left.

Orioles (67-82)
Carl Pavano, RHP (3-1, 5.26)
Yankees (80-71)
Scouting Report:
Orioles: Liz spun his best start of the year against the Twins in his last outing. The right-hander tossed eight scoreless innings, allowing just five hits. He issued only one walk, while striking out four and needing 109 pitches. In three career appearances against the Yankees, Liz has allowed four runs over a total of nine innings.
Yankees: Pavano held the Rays to four runs (three earned) through 5 1/3 innings to pick up his third win in five starts for the Yankees this season. He gave up just five hits, striking out three with two walks. Pavano exited the game with a stiff left hip after he landed awkwardly following a throw. He said later that he was frustrated he has not been able to last deeper into games. His 96 throws marked his highest pitch total since making his Major League return Aug. 23.
After blowing a five run lead, the Yanks looked destined to drop the final game of the series against the O's, but thanks to Robinson Cano's heroics in the top of the seventh, the Yanks eeked out a 8-7 win.

Darrell Rasner, RHP (5-9, 4.93)
Yankees (69-60)
Daniel Cabrera, RHP (8-8, 4.98)
Orioles (61-67)
Scouting Report:
Yankees: Rasner will get another turn through the Yankees' rotation on Sunday, when he wraps up the club's three-game series at Camden Yards. The 27-year-old was sharp on Tuesday at Rogers Centre in Toronto, holding the Blue Jays scoreless through six innings on three hits before Adam Lind sent a 3-2 cutter over the right-field wall to send Rasner to a 6 2/3-inning no-decision. Rasner's record is deceiving, as the Yankees have burned him with a lack of run support numerous times. Still, he is winless in his past six appearances. He is 1-2 with a 2.37 ERA in three starts vs. Baltimore this year.
Orioles: Cabrera allowed six earned runs over 4 1/3 innings in his last start, the latest in a string of unsuccessful outings for the right-hander. Cabrera has now allowed six earned runs in four of his last seven starts, a stretch that dates back to July 19. Cabrera allowed the Red Sox offense to jump on him early, scoring three runs in the first two innings, and then was unable to keep the game close after his own offense put up two runs in the third. His night was finished after allowing three runs and then a walk in the top of the fifth. Cabrera has pitched very well against the Yankees, though, going 3-0 while allowing seven combined earned runs in 20 innings.
